Most organizations have already begun transforming their workforce to empower them by enabling mobility. Whether it’s employees in the field, those on business trips, or even remote workers, it important that they have seamless and secure access to all the tools they need to remain productive.

As you may know, IBM Traveler can be a great tool to empower your mobile workforce by providing critical information to the user when they need it and where they need it. However, entrusting an organization’s means to communication completely on Traveler technology can keep an administrator up at night. This is why it is critical to monitor Traveler environments, devices and user activities to ensure optimal performance.

In the past, when it came to monitoring IBM Traveler, the main focus has been on resources and availability. If resources are properly allocated and services are running there should be no problems, right? Well, not exactly. Monitoring only the underlying components of Traveler can leave administrators scrambling at the last minute due to unexpected issues. Of course, many of these issues are really not that unexpected, and can be foreseen by taking your monitoring beyond resources and availability.

While VitalSigns still monitors the critical KPI’s of Traveler itself, our focus has shifted to include user activity as a second critical component to VitalSigns Traveler monitoring. By looking at user activities, administrators can identify issues faster and add more precision to their troubleshooting. For example, looking at User’s device sync times an administrator may notice abnormalities they then can immediately begin checking the individual Traveler components that are causing the abnormality. Monitoring user activity in addition to Traveler structural components gives administrators a head start on incident management. In our example above, if the same administrator had been looking only at availability, they may not have been able to identify the latency in device sync time.
