How does it monitor...Lotus Domino Servers?

See Also:Lotus Notes Database Monitoring, MailFile Monitoring, Lotus Cluster Monitoring, the Business Case for Domino monitoring

VitalSigns monitors Domino servers without installing anything on the server itself.   Using the Notes client DLLs installed on the monitoring workstation, VitalSigns can monitor any server that the client can connect to, including mixed versions of Domino, on mixed platforms, even in different domains.  VitalSigns verifies that the server is responding to Notes client requests, then checks on memory, disk space, and mail routing.

This product goes very deep into Domino, which is what you need if your organization relies on Domino. Our Product Manager has been using Notes since version 2.01-- a long time indeed. You'll be able to tell the difference immediately. This product doesn't just ping the box-- dead Domino servers often answer pings. Those monitoring tools are useless for Domino. This goes right to the heart of Domino-- using Notes RPC to track server tasks, dead and pending mail, and more. See Key Points below for more.

Are you visual? Then please watch the video.

Key Points
  • Supports all Domino server versions and platforms
  • Implemented as a Notes client, so nothing is installed on servers
  • Verifies that the server will respond to Notes client requests (users care about this)
  • Verifies and manages Domino Server Tasks (start missing tasks, stop prohibited tasks, even restart the server if a task freezes, if desired)
  • Checks Memory, and any other statistic tracked by Domino
  • Tracks Response Time
  • Detects Dead and Pending Mail pileups, and can even automatically delete Dead Mail
  • Track and Report on Mail Volume (Daily, Weekly, Monthly)
  • Can send scheduled Console Commands
  • Cluster Aware (see below)
  • Maintenance Windows are supported

Advanced Server Task Scanning

Can scan any Domino server task, including custom 3rd Party Tasks. VitalSigns can detect when tasks are hung, when they are missing, even when they are running but aren't supposed to be. Then it can take action: it can send a "load task", "tell task exit", or even "tell server restart" command to the server, depending on the task and how you configure it.
For instance, you might need to restart the server immediately if HTTP is hung, but you might decide to wait until after hours if the Calendar Connector is hung.

Note: Each server can have its own unique set of server tasks and search strings.

Note: Each task has its own set of actions that can be defined per server.

Here's an example of VitalSigns taking action in response to a server task issue-- HTTP was not found, so a "lo http" command was automatically sent

Cluster Awareness
  • Automatically assigns Domino servers to their respective clusters
  • Tracks and Graphs Cluster-related statistics such as Server.Cluster.DatabaseOpen.Failover.Success
  • Warns as Server.AvailabilityIndex approaches Availability Threshold, triggering Load Balancing Failover (a problem is looming)
  • Sends alerts when servers fail over (the problem is here)

Custom Statistics

Any statistic maintained by the Domino server can be queried and used as the basis for an alert
